ChatGPT vs Claude: Which One Should You Pay For?

Pick Claude if most of your working day is long documents, careful review, and code you run from a terminal. Pick ChatGPT if you want one $20 subscription that also covers image generation, voice, and a broad set of connectors.

Price is not the tiebreaker: both main plans are $20 a month. Claude Pro buys at least five times the free usage per five-hour session plus Claude Code in the terminal. ChatGPT Plus buys image generation, a more developed mobile and voice experience, and more third-party integrations.

If you already write code for a living, check what your employer pays for before adding a third subscription. A team seat may already cover the coding half.

Pick ChatGPT if

Choose ChatGPT when your work is wide rather than deep. It is the better default for a mixed day: turn a screenshot into a table, draft a reply, explain a stack trace, then generate a diagram for the document you are writing. Image generation and voice conversation are the two features people actually miss when they move away, and the connector ecosystem means somebody has usually already built the tool you need. It is also the easier one to hand to a non-engineer, because the defaults are opinionated and you rarely have to choose a model yourself.

The cost shows up on long inputs. Once a document runs past a few dozen pages, results get better when you split it into sections and keep your own running summary. Long refactors need re-prompting to stay on the rails, and the chat-first interface colours how you work: you describe the change, paste the code back, and iterate, rather than watching an agent work in your checkout.

Pick Claude if

Choose Claude when the work is one long artifact you have to get right: a sixty-page contract, a migration plan, a chapter, a review of a large diff. Uploading the files and iterating inside a Project keeps the source material in context across days instead of re-pasting it every morning, and the prose keeps its own structure rather than collapsing into bullet lists. Pro also includes Claude Code, so the same subscription covers terminal work: it can read the repository, run the test suite, and propose a patch.

The catch is the shared quota. Chat, desktop, mobile and Claude Code all draw from one five-hour pool with a weekly ceiling, so a heavy afternoon of agent work eats the allowance you wanted for writing later. If you hit the cap several times a week on paid work, Max 5x at $100 a month is the intended next step, not a second subscription.

Why you might want both

Plenty of engineers keep both and treat them as different tools rather than rivals: Claude for the document or the repository, ChatGPT for the quick lookup, the image, the voice note on a walk. At $40 a month combined that only makes sense if you would otherwise lose more than an hour a week working around the missing half. A cheaper pattern is one paid plan plus the free tier of the other, since both free tiers handle short sessions fine.

Audit after a month. If you cannot point to work one of them did that the other could not have done, drop it and keep the $20. The honest answer for most people is one paid plan, chosen by the job they do most, and a free account on the other side for the occasional odd task.

What the specs actually mean for you

ChatGPT bundles retrieval and tools into the default surface; Claude puts its effort into holding a long document steady and following your outline. If your work is 'find it, then summarise it', ChatGPT saves steps. If it is 'here is 60 pages, change section 4.2', Claude needs fewer retries.

Prices and limits above were read from each vendor's own page on 2026-10-29; they change without notice, so treat them as the shape of the deal rather than a quote. The practical way to choose: run one real task through both free tiers today — one document you actually care about — and keep whichever needed fewer corrections.

FAQ

Is Claude better than ChatGPT for coding?

For multi-file changes and anything you want run in a terminal, Claude Pro is the easier starting point because Claude Code is included. ChatGPT is fine for single-file debugging and explaining errors in conversation. Neither gives you inline completions in your editor, so most developers pair one of them with Copilot.

Do ChatGPT and Claude cost the same?

The main paid plans are both $20 a month, and Claude Pro drops to about $17 a month if you pay yearly. Both vendors sell tiers above that with higher usage ceilings. Check the official pricing page before budgeting, because what each tier includes moves more often than the sticker price.

Can I do real work on the free tiers?

Yes for short sessions. Both free tiers cap usage per window and keep the newest models behind the paid plan, so a full working day will hit the ceiling. Use the free tiers to find out which interface you reach for first, then pay for that one.
